For this blog we had to field strip the Dell computers we were given for the hardware class.
Dell are like snap together models; I only had to remove 4 screws total to dissemble the whole PC!!!
The hardest part was opening the dang thing, for this Dell I had to hold a tab at the top and a tab at the bottom and swing it open like a claim shell. The rest of the tear down was simple as well, a Dell.
But before we touched any of the insides we had to make sure we had on a ESD bracelet to prevent a static charge from discharging into the components.
These Dells were really basic they didn’t have much, as everything was part of the mother board.
The first thing I took out was the memory. The memory had a clamp at end all just push them down and the memory pops out.
Next was the Power supply, it was one of the few parts to have screws. Two as a matter of fact; but it still had a snap together part. First I unplugged all the power connectors, one on the board and one for each drive. Once I removed the two screws all I have to do was push a button to remove it.
Now I removed the CPU fan.(the only fan on the system) This fan connects to the mother board and it can be easy broken, but to avoid this all you have to do is make sure you push the release tab down and pull it out but the plastic connector NOT the WIRES. The fan itself didn’t have any screws and was snap together as well. Just push it to one side and it pop out.
Next on my hit list were the cables that attached to the hard drive, DVD, floppy (yes I said floppy) and the USB panel in front. Just as with the CPU fan once you pushed the release clip they were easy to remove. The hardest part was to remove them from where they are attached the case.
Next I removed the mother board, this was by far the easiest I’ve ever had in removing one from a case. Once everything attached to it had been removed all it took as two clips to release the MB and it’s tray from the case. Once I had the MB tray out I removed the only other two screws in this tear down, to slide to MB away from it’s tray. After I had the MB free I placed it in an ANTI-STATIC bag.
At this point the only thing to remove was the DVD player, Floppy, and Hard drive.
All three remove the same way. Dell attaches a green bar to the sides of these drives. To remove just push each end of the green bars towards each other and slide the drive out.
That all it took to field strip my Dell J
Here are a few photos from this fun lab.
ESD bracelet
I took these parts out so fast I forgot to take a photo of each one as I did it. So here is a group photo, so they don't feel lonely.
Hard Drive with the green bars I talked about. I love these things.
